President's Empowerment Corner

Thank you for visiting GSUL.ORG.  Has it really been a whole year since we started?  Much has happened since July 2009.   Since then we have:
  • Weathered one of the toughest economic years in the last century with no staff layoffs or reductions in service;
  • Increased our revenue in FY 2009-10;
  • Secured a $591,000 grant to establish the TechCert program, our newest IT training program in partnership with the Stride Center, designed to prepare dislocated workers and the unemployed for careers as computer technician and network administrators – and earn $16-$25 per hour;
  • Engaged our neighbors as part of our strategic planning process – meeting with families and stakeholders in Rancho Cordova, North and South Sacramento, Oak Park and West Sacramento – to find out how we can better serve the needs of our community;
  • Hosted over 100 supporters at the “Urban League Reunion”, an event designed to  re-engage former clients, staff, volunteers and board members in the Movement;
  • Emerged as a strategic partner in the region’s emerging green technology sector, serving as a member of the Green Capital Alliance, and also connected with green tech training partners in the region to identify a significant role for the GSUL;
  • Partnered with healthcare organizations such as Sacramento CARES, African American Prostate Cancer Support Network, American Heart Association, Carries TOUCH Breast Cancer Organization to provide support, screenings, education and advocacy to members of our community who are touched disproportionately by HIV/AIDS, cancer and heart disease; and
  • Helped secure employment for over 275 adults and 75 teens through our One Stop Career Center.

We have been fortunate to have strong support from our Board of Directors, all of whom stepped up this year in tough economic times to help ensure that the Greater Sacramento Urban League was able to meet its commitment to the community.  This coming year, we expect to continue identifying key areas of focus for the affiliate, including establishing and expanding our economic development and entrepreneurship programming; identify social enterprise programs to fund job creation and economic development strategies; increase research and advocacy efforts; and enhance youth programs.

To achieve success, however, requires the support and involvement of people like you!  If you have a desire to join the Urban League Movement, or you have the ability make a tax-deductible contribution, you can contribute to our growing success in meeting the needs of our community by donating your time, talent and treasure to the GSUL and the Urban League Movement.  Whether as a program volunteer, member of the Young Professionals or the Guild, or as a member of our affiliate, there are plenty of opprotunities to create change and help make our community a better place to live.  Please visit our donation and volunteer pages for more information.

Yours in the struggle,

David
