Youth Programs Urban Youth Empowerment Program

Home

The National Urban League, in its continuing efforts to engage the most challenged of our youth, has received initial funding to implement a comprehensive workforce development initiative to re-connect “high-risk” out-of-school and adjudicated 18 through 21 year old youth with education through employment.  The Urban Youth Empowerment Program (UYEP) is a youth career preparation program rooted in work activities.  Our partnership with faith and community based organizations will under gird this model by establishing initial work environments and providing advocates and mentors to high risk youth.  The Greater Sacramento Urban League has been one of the affiliates selected to provide the critical support structures necessary to begin equipping our youth with the new skills and abilities required to compete in a knowledge-based economy.  The Sacramento Urban Youth Program (SUYEP), in conjunction with our partners, will deliver the academic, career exploration and personal development acumen that are prerequisites to launching successful careers.  SUYEP intends to demonstrate the relative effectiveness of timely engagement of the targeted population in work-related activities that enhance the basic competencies that employers want.  The underlying expectation is that early exposure to career opportunities will spark a desire for knowledge and introduce the concept of life-long learning-an essential component toward continuous development and credentialing for all workers, especially youth disenfranchised from mainstream America.

The Greater Sacramento Urban League will provide the following services:

1.  Assessment, Case Management and Mentoring Services

2. Educational Services that shall include GED and academic enrichment activities, and linkages to post-secondary education.

3. Workforce Preparation Services that shall include community service work experience and subsidized internships.

4. Personal Development Services that shall include life, leadership, civic responsibility, and financial management skills.

5. Unsubsidized employment Services that shall provide employment placements for enrolled participants.
