The Urban League Young
Professionals (GSULYP) is an auxiliary of the Sacramento affiliate. Young adults
between 21 and 40 years of age dedicate themselves to serving their
community through social and community activism. The goal is to engage
young professionals in the National Urban League’s movement toward
achievement of social and economic equality by offering them opportunities
in personal and professional development.
Urban League Young
Professionals focal points are:
-
Political Participation – assist
local chapters in developing and implementing programs to ensure that its
members and the community are informed and educated on political issues
that effect their lives and communities;
-
Financial Literacy – working hard to
focus on economic self-sufficiency and to assist in this endeavor by
championing initiatives to provide a solid foundation for financial
literacy. Hosting a Financial Literacy Summit, where families in
urban communities can share information on the fundamentals of budgeting,
banking accounts, and ways to build wealth.
- Real World
Education – implementing two national initiatives in areas where young
professionals can build bridges between the real-world and the school
environment for students between the ages of 11-18 years. The following
programs are designed to address the need for giving back to the next
generation and creating positive role models for youth in our
communities. Fall and Spring Break Workout, where middle school
and/or high school age students are taken to their mentors places of
employment. Internship Development Program, working with
corporations and employers to bridge a relationship that results in
defined internship opportunities for young people.
In addition to programs
specific to the needs of the communities in which our chapters are based,
GSULYP develops local programming to support the Urban League's five point
empowerment agenda:
Join
the Young Professionals the second Wednesday of each month at 6:30 pm
at the Greater Sacramento Urban League Headquarters as they work on empowering individuals of every racial, ethnic and economic
background to enter the economic and social mainstream of America.
